Stop the Spread of Rumors
Know the facts about corona virus disease 2019.
What Is Corona Virus?
Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel corona virus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. Corona viruses are a family of viruses that cause disease in animals. The animal source of Covid-19 has not yet been identified, but the original host is thought to be bats. Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market but may have infected live chickens or other animals sold there.
Is there a cure for the corona virus?
Like the common cold, there is no specific antibiotic or medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new corona virus. There is no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 can seek medical care to help relieve symptoms. Work to develop a vaccine is accelerating but it is unlikely to be available until next year.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Like cold and flu bugs, the virus is spread via droplets when a person coughs or sneezes. The droplets land on surfaces and are picked up on the hands of others and spread further. People catch the virus when they touch their infected hands to their mouth, nose or eyes. The common symptoms of covid-19 are :
- Shortness of breath
Does face mask protect you from COVID-19?
For the general public without respiratory illness, wearing lightweight disposable surgical masks is not recommended. Because they don’t fit tightly, they may allow tiny infected droplets to get into the nose, mouth or eyes. Also, people with the virus on their hands who touch their face under a mask might become infected. People with a respiratory illness can wear these masks to lessen their chance of infecting others. Bear in mind that stocking up on masks makes fewer available for sick patients and health care workers who need them.
Who started the coronavirus?
Viruses can change over time. Occasionally, a disease outbreak happens when a virus that is common in an animal such as a pig, bat or bird undergoes changes and passes to humans. This is likely how the new corona virus came to be. But various crazy conspiracy theories have been circulating that the virus somehow escaped from a Chinese lab, either by accident or design. However, this is categorically untrue and scientists studying its genetic code have linked it to bats. It probably then jumped to another animal, which passed it on to humans.
Is there anything I should be doing to prevent myself getting it?
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20
