Kathmandu : At least 83 people have been killed in a lightning strike in the Indian state of Bihar today.
According to a report released by the Disaster Management Department at 6 pm on Thursday, 83 people have been killed by lightning in the last few days.
According to the department, the highest number of deaths occurred in Gopalgunj. Thirteen people have been killed there. Similarly, 8/8 people have died in Madhuwani and Nawada. Besides, six people have died in Siwan, six in Bhagalpur, five in East Champaran, five each in Darbhanga and Banke. Similarly, two person were killed in West Champaran.
According to the BBC, lightning in 23 districts of Bihar has caused huge loss of life and property. The government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those killed in the lightning strike.
Former Deputy Chief Minister and current Leader of the Opposition Tejaswi Yadav has expressed grief over the incident.
Apart from Bihar, some people have also died in Uttar Pradesh due to lightning. Five people were killed and several others were injured when lightning struck Deoria.
