More than 80 die of alcohol poisoning in Punjab, India

Kathmandu : More than 80 people have recently died in the Indian state of Punjab after consuming poisonous alcohol, according to police.

The dead included people from three districts in the northern part of Punjab province. Police have arrested 25 people on charges of selling illegal liquor.

Hundreds of people die every year in different states of India due to poisoning. Such illegal liquor is available in the local market at Rs 10 per liter.

According to police, 11 people have been killed in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, 12 in Amirtsar district and 63 in Tarn Taran district.

Police suspect that some other people also died due to poisoning.

Police estimate that the death toll could be higher as some people were cremated without postmortem.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has said that an inquiry has been ordered into the recent deaths. He said that strict action would be taken against those found guilty of selling illegal and poisonous liquor.
