Kathmandu : On the occasion of the Constitution Day, it has been decision to release 289 prisoners from prisons across the country by waiving the remaining sentences.
President Bidyadevi Bhandari has decided to release 289 prisoners with effect from Saturday as per the recommendation of the Government of Nepal (Council of Ministers).
According to Article 276 of the Constitution, Criminal Offenses (Sentencing and Execution) Act-074, imprisonment can be waived on the recommendation of the government.
Spokesperson at the President’s Office Hari Prasad Dahal has informed that the decision to waive the remaining imprisonment has to be taken by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers as per the Criminal Offenses-074 (Imprisonment Cut) Rules-076. Only prisoners who have spent 50 percent of their sentence and are well mannered will be pardoned.
