Collecting Yarsa Gumba in Dolpa has been suspended

Kathmandu : Collection of valuable herb Yarsa Gumba has been suspended in the Himalayan district of Dolpa due to increasing risk of covid-19 (Corona virus).

A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee and District Covid-19 Infection Management Center on Sunday suspended the collection of Yarsagumba until the situation returns to normal.

Earlier, an all-party meeting held on the initiative of the District Coordination Committee had decided to open the Yarsagumba collection from Jestha 10. It was decided not to implement the decision as the coronavirus infection was on the rise. Chief District Officer of Dolpa, Madhav Prasad Dhakal, informed that the collection of Yarsagumba has been stopped to reduce the risk as the corona virus infection rate has been increasing recently.

He said that the collection of Yarsagumba will be stopped until the situation is brought under control.

Every year thousands of people come here to collect Yarsagumba in the roofs of Dolpa.  Residents of Dolpa, Jajarkot, Rukum West, Rukum East and other districts use the money earned in this season for household expenses.

Yarsagumba, also known as the Himalayan Diamond, is the main source of income for the people of the region. Yarsagumba is collected here for two months Bhaisak and Jestha. A person earns at least two lakhs more.

“Some families go to Patan to collect Yarsagumba,” said Manjit Lama of Dolpa Madkechula. “They earn at least five lakh rupees.” “What would happen if thousand of people gathered in fear of the corona virus?” Said Chief District Officer Dhakal. “It’s more important to save lives than to collect Yarsagumba in such a situation,” he said.
