The government will import 30,000 metric tons of sugar

Kathmandu : The government is going to import 30,000 metric tonnes of sugar with customs concession. The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies has stated that an agreement has been sought with the Ministry of Finance for the purchase of 30,000 metric tonnes of sugar targeting the big festival.

Urmila KC, Joint Spokesperson of the Ministry, informed that the salt trading or food management and trading company will be allowed to import sugar by taking a decision from the Council of Ministers.

“We have sought the consent of Artha to purchase 30,000 metric tonnes of sugar. Once he gives permission, the process will increase,” said co-spokesperson KC. According to the ministry, sugar is being sold at Rs 100 per kg in the market.

The ministry says that it is trying to buy subsidized sugar to control the market price and prevent shortage during the main festivals. Last year, the government had also purchased 30,000 metric tonnes of subsidized sugar.

However, private sugar producers have said that import is not necessary as sugar production will be good this year. Raj Kumar Agrawal, vice-president of the Sugar Producers’ Association, claims that 12 industries are fully operational and 200,000 metric tonnes of sugar will be produced this year.

“This time, 80,000 metric tonnes more sugar is produced than last year. There is no need to import,” said Agrawal. According to private sugar producers, Nepal consumes 2.5 million metric tons of sugar annually.
